The first male chess world champion from China
Over the weekend, Chinese chess player Ding Liren won the World Chess Championship for men. In the final match, Liren faced Russian player Ian Nepomniachtchi and won in a tiebreak after both players had previously played to a 7-7 draw in the final series.Liren now takes over the title of world chess champion from Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who had won the title five times before. Carlsen did not participate in this year's tournament as he did not feel motivated to face Nepomniachtchi once again, a player he had met and defeated without losing a match in the 2021 World Chess Championship. With Ding Liren's victory, China now holds the world championship titles for both men and women. Chinese player Ju Wenjun has been the reigning women's world chess champion since 2018.Above is an interview with Liren after his win in the 2023 World Chess Championship, and below is the tiebreak match that decided the tournament.
