Regains title for most moons in our solar system
Last week, astronomers announced the discovery of 62 new moons around Saturn. This brings the planet's total to 145 moons, making Saturn the planet with the most known moons in the solar system. Earlier this year, twelve newly discovered celestial bodies around Jupiter were given moon status, bringing Jupiter's total to 92 recognized moons and briefly putting it in the lead for most moons. However, with the newly recognized moons around Saturn, Jupiter falls back to second place in the moon race. Both Jupiter and Saturn likely have more undiscovered moons. However, scientists believe that even with the discovery of more moons around Jupiter, it may have difficulty catching up to Saturn in the moon race. Above is a picture of Saturn taken by NASA and ESA's Cassini spacecraft in 2004.
