AI assists with final inspection at BMW factory

At BMW's factory in Regensburg AI will now assist with the final inspection of painted cars. The entire process is automated and the technology checks over the cars, marking areas that are not approved and need to be fixed. The factory produces the 1 Series, X1, and X2, and it is said to be the first place in the world to do like this. The entire process is digitized and any issues detected by the AI technology are fixed by robots. A striped pattern is projected onto the surface of the cars which is then scanned by a camera to detect any deviations in the stripes. The computer then saves the location of the defect while creating a 3D image of it. Four robots are then tasked with sanding the area, fixing the paint and polishing it so that it is not visible.

This technology, not surprisingly, shortens the entire process and the goal is to roll it out to other factories around the world.
