Android app recorded users every 15 minutes
Without their knowledge
The Android app iRecorder Screen Recorder, which started as an innocent screen recording app, has started recording one minute of audio every 15 minutes and forwarding these recordings via an encrypted link to the developer's server after an update. The app was first released in September 2021, but it was about a year later that it began recording without users knowing. The entire incident is documented in a blog post by Essential Security against Evolving Threats researcher Lukas Stefanko. In the blog post, Stefanko writes that the app was updated in August 2022 with malicious code "based on the open-source AhMyth Android RAT (remote access trojan)."The app had 50,000 downloads at the time it was reported and removed from the Play Store. Apps with AhMyth embedded in them are also said to have bypassed Google's filters in the past.
