Apple aims to reduce reliance on Samsung screens
Can microLED be the solution?
Apple wants to begin mass-producing the next generation of screens to reduce dependence on rival Samsung and increase control over the supply of this important component. Apple has spent a lot on developing microLED screens over the past decade and plans to carry out the manufacturing process in-house with partners, similar to its chips.MicroLED screens are a new technology that is less power-hungry and can be made thinner than OLED screens, offering better outdoor performance and can be used on curved or foldable surfaces. Rumors suggest that the screens will first be used in the Apple Watch and are planned to be ready by 2025. Apple has different R&D departments for screens in the USA, Taiwan, and Japan.Apple is collaborating with ams-Osram for microLED components, LG Display for substrates, and TSMC for 12-inch wafers. Apple has also developed micro-OLED screens for its augmented reality devices in collaboration with TSMC. Apple has invested at least $1 billion in R&D and samples for microLED technology over the past ten years.
