Astroscale demonstrates how to clean space from debris
ELSA-M to send satellites to their final resting place
The Japanese space company Astroscale has released a new video clip showing how their space debris program ELSA-M will work.ELSA-M (End of Life Services by Astroscale - Multiple) is a "garbage truck satellite" that chases down dead satellites and then docks with them. After that, ELSA-M changes the orbit of the satellite and finally releases it, allowing it to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. Then ELSA-M can search for a new satellite ready for cremation in Earth's atmosphere. However, for this to work, the dead satellite must have a magnetic coupling compatible with ELSA-M's docking function.Sometime in 2024-2025, Astroscale plans to launch an ELSA-M satellite into space to capture and scrap one of satellite company OneWeb's satellites.
