BMW unveils i5 Sedan

New electric car starting at 815,000 SEK

BMW is now rolling out a highly anticipated model - the i5 Sedan. This car runs solely on electricity and will also be available next year as a wagon, called the i5 Touring. This marks the start of the new 5 Series which has now reached its eighth generation but for now it's the electric i-version that the manufacturer is pushing out, with a launch in October. Gasoline and diesel hybrid versions will come later.

Compared to its predecessor, the car has grown 9.7 centimeters in length, now measuring a total of 5.06 meters. The width has increased by 3.2 centimeters to 1.9 meters, and the height by 3.6 centimeters to 1.51 meters. The distance between the wheel axles has increased by two centimeters and is now 2.99 meters. The trunk should hold up to 490 liters. This will be BMW's first model to have a completely vegan interior as standard. The seats, dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel are all made of vegan materials. Many of the gadgets inside come from the big brother i7.

Initially the i5 will come in two versions - the i5 eDrive40 and the i5 M60. The former has rear-wheel drive, an electric motor with 250 kW/340 horsepower and 430 Newton meters, goes from 0-100 km/h in six seconds and tops out at 193 km/h. The combined consumption is stated to be 15.9 - 19.5 kWh and on one charge it should be able to travel up to 582 kilometers.

The i5 M60 will be the top version and will have performance equivalent to today's BMW M550i xDrive with a V8 engine. It has an electric motor on the front axle of 192 kW/261 horsepower and the same motor as the eDrive40 on the rear axle. The total power is stated to be 380 kW/517 horsepower and 795 Newton meters of torque. When in sport mode or using M Sport Boost, you get 601 horsepower and 820 Newton meters to play with instead. 0-100 km/h should take 3.8 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 230 km/h. This car should consume 18.2 to 20.6 kWh and travel up to 516 kilometers. Both cars have an 81.2 kWh battery pack and you should be able to fast charge it up to 205 kW.

The car can be ordered from today and the i5 eDrive40 starts at SEK 815,000, while you'll have to fork out SEK 1,257,000 to become the owner of an i5 M60. The BMW 530e, BMW 530e xDrive and BMW 550e xDrive will be available in the spring.
