The new BMW 5 Series and 7 Series have now been approved to use autonomous driving technology up to 130 km/h in Germany. This is referring to the Highway Assistant function, which is the first system to be approved for this speed. Mercedes' Drive Pilot system is also approved, but only for speeds up to 64 km/h. In the BMW, you can take your hands off the wheel for an extended period of time and the car will drive itself, but you must keep your eyes on the road at all times and be ready to take over the driving if necessary.
