Check out vertical farming
Plenty uses robots to grow vegetables
We have previously written about indoor facilities where vegetables and other produce are grown vertically. In this clip, you can see what it looks like when CNET visited the American company Plenty, which grows various types of salad products in their vertical farming setup. What is grown in these vertical farms is not dependent on sunlight and can grow regardless of the weather outside. A large part of planting, growing, harvesting, and packing is done by robots, which also means that there is not a need for a lot of personnel on the facilities.Vertical farms require large amounts of energy, and therefore, Plenty has built their facility in an area where there should be plenty of renewable energy from solar and wind power plants. The cost-effectiveness of vertical farming is probably up for discussion since the facilities and the energy required to operate them are more expensive than traditional farming. However, in the long run, this may be compensated for by the ability to grow under perfect conditions year-round.
