China's first passenger plane takes off on maiden flight
C919 to compete with Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320
Yesterday marked the first commercial flight of the C919 airplane model, China's first domestically developed passenger jet. The model was first developed in 2008 and was unveiled in 2015. The flight was operated by China Eastern Airlines and lasted approximately two hours, traveling between Shanghai and Beijing. Chinese TV channel CCTV reported that there were over 130 passengers on board. The C919 is developed and manufactured by the state-owned aircraft manufacturer Comac. The model is approximately 39 meters long and has the capacity to carry 158-174 passengers, with a range of around 5600 km. With the C919, Comac hopes to compete primarily with Boeing's 737 models and Airbus A320 models, which have similar passenger capacities.Comac reports that it has received around 1200 orders for the C919. In five years, the company hopes to manufacture around 150 C919 planes per year. Initially, the plan is for the C919 to only be used for domestic flights in China. Above is a segment from the South China Morning Post about the C919's first commercial flight.
