Company develops edible cups
Good for the environment but expensive for the consumer
The Australian company Good-Edi has developed mugs for coffee and other drinks that can be eaten up once the contents have been consumed. The company hopes that their mugs can eventually reduce the large amounts of waste that disposable cups contribute to society.Good-Edi's mugs are made from a mixture of rye flour, wheat bran, oat bran, sugar, salt, coconut oil, and water. The mugs are designed to keep hot drinks in the mug without leaking for about 40 minutes, while cold drinks can be stored in the mug for up to eight hours without leaking. The problem with Good-Edi's cups is that they are significantly more expensive than traditional paper cups with plastic liners. A cup currently costs almost $3. Even if the price could be reduced through increased production in the future, each cup is still expected to make a cup of coffee about $1 more expensive.
