EU plans cable connection between Europe and Georgia
Routing internet traffic away from Russia

Financial Times reports that the EU is planning to build an underwater cable between the EU and Georgia, which could connect the EU with the countries in the Caucasus without having to send data traffic through Russia. The cable would be laid in international waters in the Black Sea, and the cost of the 1,100 km long cable is said to be €49 million, equivalent to 550 million Swedish kronor. The EU and Georgia began planning for a cable as early as 2021, but are now said to be particularly keen to actually get the cable in place after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. There is currently no information on which EU countries the potential cable to Georgia could start from. It is also unclear when the cable could be built. The "Caucasus Cable System" (pictured above) already exists between Bulgaria and Georgia. However, ownership of that cable seems to be somewhat disputed, which may be why the EU would like to have an additional cable for security reasons.
