European bison could be reintroduced in Sweden
European bison absent in the country for 8000 years
Sweden's Agricultural University, SLU, together with the Skogssällskapet Foundation, has initiated a feasibility study to investigate the possibilities of reintroducing wild European bison, also known as wisent, to Sweden. Wisent became extinct in the wild in Europe in the 1920s, but they have not existed in the wild in Sweden for 8,000 years. The reason for investigating the reintroduction of wisent to Sweden is to promote biodiversity and to benefit nature conservation."Until the mid-1900s, our forest-grazing cows fulfilled the functions that wild wisent and aurochs had previously done, by grazing grass and herbs in the forest. Today, we have problems with overgrowth because the large herbivores are missing in the forest landscape," says Karin Fällman Lillqvist, sustainability manager at Skogssällskapet.Today, there are wild, reintroduced wisent living in Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, and Belarus.
