Mastodon, the decentralized social media service that many see as a competitor to Twitter, has made it a bit easier for new users to find their place on the platform. One thing that can make using Mastodon a bit cumbersome is that discussions on the platform are held across multiple servers (instances). This means, unlike Twitter and other centralized services, Mastodon users can have discussions on specific servers that are not visible to Mastodon users who have joined other servers.

To make it easier for new Mastodon users, they will be directed to the "mastodon.social" instance when they create an account on the platform, so they don't have to choose which of the over 12,000 Mastodon instances to join. New users can of course choose to join other Mastodon instances when they create their account, and it is also possible to switch instances after the account has been created.
