Mori3: A Modular Robot Built with Polygons
Perhaps destined to spacecrafts in the future
Foto: EPFL RRL
Robot researchers at the Swiss École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have showcased a new modular robot that they believe could potentially be useful in the space industry in the future. The robot is called Mori3 and consists of triangular modules that can be connected to form various polygon-shaped structures, as you can see two of these modules in the image above. The idea behind this is that the robot can be assembled and used for different purposes. In the video clip below, you can see how Mori3 moves by using some of the modules as legs, as well as when it rolls up into a kind of caterpillar track and rolls forward. There are also examples showing when a single Mori3 module rolls forward on its own, as well as when multiple modules are used to function as a robot arm. There is currently no information available about whether or when we might see Mori3, or a further development of it, aboard a spacecraft.
