The American copyright organization, National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA), is now suing Twitter, claiming that the platform is not doing enough to address the unauthorized sharing of music.NMPA represents a dozen record labels, including Sony Music Publishing, BMG Rights Management, and Universal Music Publishing Group, and has identified around 1700 songs that have been shared on Twitter without any action taken by the platform to remove them. NMPA is seeking at least $250 million in damages for the songs shared on the service.Unlike most major social media platforms and other services where users can upload music, Twitter does not have licensing agreements with record labels and rights holders whose music is shared on the platform. Services such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch have such licensing agreements in place.
