Renault's new coupe-SUV is called Rafale
The name comes from an old airplane
Soon Renault's model Austral will come in a coupe version - yay! But it won't be called Austral Coupe, instead it will be named Rafale. This comes from Renault's involvement in the aviation industry. In the 1930s, Renault manufactured engines for cars, trains and planes. In 1933 they took over the manufacturer Caudron and established Caudron-Renault. One of the planes they produced was called the C460 - Rafale. The plane was built to set speed records. Renault thinks this can be reflected in the car and therefore chose the same name. The car will premiere at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget on June 18 and will be launched next spring.
