Samsung to purchase OLED panels from LG
OLED dominates premium TV market

Samsung has signed an agreement with its main competitor LG, which means that Samsung will purchase several million OLED panels from LG to be used in Samsung's more expensive TV sets in the high-end segment. This can probably be seen as a small defeat for Samsung and a feather in the cap for LG.In 2015, Samsung decided to stop using OLED panels in its more exclusive TV sets as it did not believe that consumers were willing to pay for it. Instead, Samsung focused on so-called QLED panels, which are a variant of LED LCD screens that are cheaper to manufacture than OLED. However, Samsung released a series of QD-OLED last year and is expected to invest significantly more in that segment in the future. It seems that competition in the market for LCD TV sets, especially from Chinese TV manufacturers, has prompted Samsung to once again start supplying more of its more expensive TV models with OLED panels. Samsung will purchase two million OLED panels from LG next year, which will be installed in 77- and 83-inch models of Samsung's TV sets. According to sources contacted by news agency Reuters, LG will supply Samsung with 3 and 5 million OLED panels in 2025 and 2026, respectively.LG currently has about half of the world market for OLED TV sets, while Sony has 26 percent. Samsung currently has only 6 percent of the OLED market but has been the world's largest supplier of TV sets for the past 17 years.
