Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reports in a new study that the number of operational nuclear weapons in the world is increasing.According to the report, there were approximately 12,500 nuclear warheads globally in January 2023, of which 9,576 were ready for use. This is an increase of 86 warheads since the same month last year. It is said to be the first time since the end of the Cold War that the number of operational nuclear weapons in the world is increasing. However, compared to the Cold War, the number of nuclear weapons is relatively low. At that time, there were around 75,000 nuclear warheads around the world.China is the country whose nuclear arsenal has increased the most, from 350 warheads in January 2022 to 410 in January 2023. However, the United States and Russia continue to be the countries with by far the most nuclear weapons, which you can see in SIPRI's table below.
