Swiss Destinus develops supersonic plane

Four-hour flights between Europe and Australia

The Swiss company Destinus is another company aiming to build a successor to the supersonic plane Concorde. The company was founded in 2021 but has already developed two prototypes that are being tested to build a hydrogen-powered supersonic plane that can fly up to five times the speed of sound.

At those speeds, for example, you could fly between Frankfurt and Sydney in 4:15 hours and between Frankfurt and Memphis in 2:30 hours. Destinus aims to develop a smaller passenger plane sometime in the 2030s and a larger plane, which could carry around 200 passengers, sometime in the 2040s.

Waverider design as the basis for Destinus' supersonic plane

The design of Destinus' future supersonic plane is based on a design called "Waverider" developed in the 1950s. Destinus' Swedish business development manager Martina Löfqvist says about the design to CNN:

"The purpose of it is so that you can ride on top of the shock waves that are generated from the vehicle itself. It’s a pretty efficient shape where you can use less fuel to fly through it because you have less resistance with the air."
