One thing that is really expensive in an electric car is the battery pack. If the price of this can be reduced the car can also become cheaper. Now Tesla is said to have started producing rear-wheel drive Model Ys with cheaper battery packs from the Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD, which in turn should result in cheaper Model Ys for customers. The battery, called Blade, has a higher energy density than lithium iron phosphate batteries and is also lighter. The battery is said to be part of the car's load-bearing structure and is said to be 55 kWh, giving the car a range of 440 kilometers.
