The AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton is leaving Google
To be able to discuss the dangers of artificial intelligence
AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, also known as the "godfather of AI" by some, has left Google after working for the company for ten years. Hinton told the New York Times that he left Google in part to be able to speak about the dangers of artificial intelligence development without affecting Google's work with AI.In an interview with the New York Times, Hinton said that he believes AI has the potential to drastically change the job market and that artificial intelligences could lead to a world where we no longer know what is true and false. He also said that artificial intelligence has developed much faster than he and others had predicted."The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people — a few people believed that. But most people thought it was way off. And I thought it was way off. I thought it was 30 to 50 years or even longer away. Obviously, I no longer think that," Hinton said.In a longer-term perspective, Hinton is also concerned that artificial intelligences may begin to write and run their own code. However, he did not mention how far into the future he sees such a scenario.Above, you can watch an interview from earlier this year with Geoffrey Hinton from CBS.
