Jackals may be able to replace fighter jets in the future
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) has begun testing a radio-controlled drone that has the capacity to fire missiles, something that traditional drones usually cannot do due to the recoil that occurs when missiles are fired. The drone, or mini-helicopter, is called Jackal and can be equipped with missiles weighing up to 15 kg. The missiles should be able to hit targets up to 6 km away from the drone. Jackal was developed by the British company Flyby Technology in collaboration with the Turkish company FlyBVLOS Technology and British Maxwell Innovations. The missiles used by Jackal are called Martlet and are a type of lightweight missile developed by the British defense company Thales. Former fighter pilot Jon Parker is CEO of Flyby Technology and he says about Jackal:"War is about winning, and JACKAL is designed by war fighters for that ultimate aim. The days of having a Fighter Pilot in the cockpit are numbered and I realise I will not perhaps be loved for bringing about the end of my own kind. But the future of warfare is changing and JACKAL is part of that future as a true multi-role attack aircraft."In the clip below, you can check out when the RAF tests firing a missile from Jackal. There is currently no information on when Jackal may appear in actual combat or be used for other defense tasks.
