Toyota unveils colorful solar panels

Most solar panels are black and have a simple design. However, Toyota has developed a technology that allows for panels to come in different colors and patterns, which could add some flair to your roof or wherever you choose to place them.

The reason why solar cells are traditionally black is the same reason why it's warmer to wear dark clothes than light ones when it's sunny outside. Colors block light, and therefore black is the most effective color to have on a solar panel. But now Toyota has found a way to make efficient panels while also making them more colorful. They have used color pigments from the automotive industry which only reflect certain wavelengths of light, allowing much of the light to still reach the panel and generate power. The goal is to make the technology work for vehicles so you could have solar panels "hidden" under the paint around your car. However, the challenge is still to create panels that can follow a car's curves and shapes.

It remains to be seen when we will see more of this technology.
