Turbulence is increasing due to climate change
Invisible to airplane radars
Climate change is increasing the occurrence of dangerous turbulence that is invisible to aircraft radar. This is according to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters. It's about so-called clear-air turbulence (CAT) that occurs in cloudless skies and is expected to become an increasingly bigger problem as the world gets warmer. The study shows that CAT has already become more common, with a 55% increase in turbulence along a typical flight route over the North Atlantic between 1979 and 2020. The increase is most pronounced over the USA and the North Atlantic, but the study also shows an increase along popular routes over Europe, the Middle East, the South Atlantic, and the eastern Pacific. CAT is difficult to navigate and can cause serious damage to aircraft and passengers, costing US airlines hundreds of millions of dollars each year. According to the researchers, airlines need to consider how to handle the increased turbulence.
