Despite upgrading the numbers in their S-chips every time a new Apple Watch is released, the smartwatch has not actually received any performance upgrades since the Apple Watch Series 6 with S6, which was released in 2020. However, it seems that this will change later this year. According to reliable source Mark Gurman, this year's Apple Watch will feature a new chip based on the same architecture as the A15 chip found in the iPhone 13 series.

This should not only lead to better performance, but also perhaps more importantly, better efficiency, which hopefully will result in even longer battery life.
