Venturi Lab unveils new lunar rover wheel
Rolling on the Moon by 2026
During the Paris Air Show over the weekend, Venturi Group showcased this deformable lunar lander wheel. They claim to have reinvented the wheel, and it will be featured on the company's Astrolab Flex lunar lander, which will be taken to the moon by Space X's Starship in 2026. Previous wheels used here have always been solid, but this one can be deformed in various ways, making it more robust and durable, as you can see. The wheels are designed to support the two-ton vehicle without any issues, and the top speed they will be subjected to will not exceed 20 km/h. Each wheel contains 192 cables that function as flexible spokes. Before departure, the wheel will now undergo testing at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland and the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.
