Western Digital criticized for hard drive warnings
Seems to want to scare customers into buying new hard drives

Hard drive manufacturer Western Digital has once again come under fire for something that some believe the company is doing to deceive its customers. This time, it's about customers who use Western Digital hard drives in storage solutions for Synology NAS devices being urged to replace them after three years of use.The Western Digital Device Analytics (WDDA) software automatically starts warning about the hard drives after they have been in use for three years. The idea behind the software is to analyze how the hard drive behaves and warn if it detects that the hard drive may be about to stop functioning optimally. However, hard drives that have passed three years receive warnings without any other faults being detected. Some users are very critical of this procedure, as they believe that Western Digital is causing unnecessary worry and may scare customers into replacing fully functioning hard drives for no other reason than that they are older than three years. YouTuber SpaceRex says, among other things, in the video clip you can see below:"It is clearly predatory tactics by Western Digital trying to sell more hard drives."Western Digital has previously been criticized for including slow SMR disks in NAS solutions, cheating with SSD disks, and, as recently as last month, selling SSD disks that can delete the data stored on the disk all by themselves.
