I år var det 30 år sedan Tim Berners-Lee skapade det vi idag kallar för webben och han har de senaste åren uttryckt en hel del kritik mot hur webben har utvecklats sedan den blev den informationsbärande gigant den är idag. Därför har Berners-Lee nu dragit igång ett initiativ som kallas för "Contract for the web".

Förhoppningen med Contract for the web är att detta ska leda till ett sundare, säkrare och mer öppet klimat på webben och motverka att webben är på väg mot en slags "digital dystopi". Detta är något som Berners-Lee och många andra anser håller på att hända i takt med att auktoritära stater, företag och andra tar ett allt hårdare tag om internet i största allmänhet och då kanske webben i synnerhet.

Själva initiativet vilar på nio grundprinciper där tre riktar sig till regeringar, tre till företag och tre till oss medborgare och internetanvändare. De nio principerna är:

Governments
Principle 1 – Ensure everyone can connect to the internet
Principle 2 – Keep all of the internet available, all of the time
Principle 3 – Respect and protect people’s fundamental online privacy and data rights

Companies
Principle 4 – Make the internet affordable and accessible to everyone.
Principle 5 – Respect and protect people’s privacy and personal data to build online trust.
Principle 6 – Develop technologies that support the best in humanity and challenge the worst.

Citizens
Principle 7 – Be creators and collaborators on the Web.
Principle 8 – Build strong communities that respect civil discourse and human dignity.
Principle 9 – Fight for the Web

Contract for the web backas upp av över 150 företag, organisationer och regeringar. Bland företagen kan nämnas Google, Microsoft, Facebook och Twitter medan det från organisationshåll finns organisationer som Electronic Frontier Foundation, Reportrar utan gränser och W3C. Även regeringarna i Tyskland, Frankrike och Ghana har undertecknat Contract for the web.
