USA ska sluta med test där man skjuter ner satelliter

USA:s vice president Kamala Harris uppgav igår att landets försvarsmakt kommer att sluta med tester där man skjuter ner satelliter som ligger i omloppsbana runt jorden.
Det handlar framför allt om de tester av satellitnedskjutningar som gjort där man använder missiler som avlossats från jorden för att skjuta ner satelliter. Sådana tester har fram tills nu tidigare genomförts av USA, Ryssland, Kina och Indien. Harris sa i ett uttalande om att USA nu ska sluta testskjuta ner satelliter:
"We have consistently condemned these tests and called them reckless, but that is not enough. Today we are going further. I am pleased to announce that as of today, the United States commits not to conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile testing. Simply put: These tests are dangerous, and we will not conduct them. We are the first nation to make such a commitment. And I call on all nations to join us."
Det största problemet som kan uppstå när man skjuter ner en satellit är att delarna från detta, det så kallade rymdskrotet, riskerar att flyga iväg och förstöra andra satelliter som ligger i omloppsbana runt jorden. Harris sa:
"If a satellite was taken out by debris, it could affect the daily weather forecast, GPS driving directions, and even your favorite TV station. Critical infrastructure, like wind turbines that power our homes, well, they rely on satellites for connectivity. Satellites help us track the climate crisis. They enable our commercial activities. And they help us protect our troops and our people. All of this is threatened by the debris created by these reckless tests."
Huruvida även andra nationer som har kapacitet att skjuta ner satelliter kommer att haka på USA teststopp för satellitnedskjutningar återstår att se.
