PixelJunk Racers, Monsters and Eden made Q-Games a household name between gamers. Now when a new PixelJunk game is announced the gaming world is watching. Do you feel more pressure now when releasing/announcing a game then before?
Yes definitely, especially for Shooter *laughs*. For every game we release we try to raise "the bar" and we really have to make sure that the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed. And because of this I think every single game we make also gets more and more polished.
Also the coverage from the media has been increasing. We get a lot more response now when we make a press release or release a video for example. For Racers we hardly could get any response and even with Monsters there was hardly any response in the beginning. But after about a month or two it suddenly started to really grow by word of mouth. Then with Eden there was huge expectation when we launched it and with Shooter I think it will be the same. And I actually think it's quite scary to meet peoples expectations. But one problem with meeting peoples expectations is that we try to make games that not conform so much to what people expect so that's bit of a paradox really. For example, the controls for Eden are quite different and we could have made them very, very simplistic but we wanted to do something different and that is one of the key things we try to do with PixelJunk. Same thing with Racers where we gave the players a different type of control scheme for what they normally expect. So often people might be expecting something else but they actually get what we are creating and sometimes there is a bit of a gap. But we try to persuade people to appreciate that *laughs*.
How are the expectations for the PixelJunk games here in Japan?
In Japan, not so much. It's a very small market since the number of PSN users is much lower then the rest of the world.
When you are patching a game or releasing an encore pack, how do you decide what to change/add? Do you listen to reviews, the community or your own instinct?
A mix really. Sometimes it's things that we wanted to put in the original game but we didn't have time for. Sometimes when you are at the end of the project you have to realize that you can't fit everything in the game before release and you have to concentrate to get what you have in a functional and complete game. So a few things that we wanted to put in goes up on the shelf for a while, and with the Encore packs we can add those ideas to the game afterwards. We also look at the forums and if people are have problems with part of the game or they want "burn in protection" for their plasma TVs, we fix that with a patch.
Sometimes we even put in game ideas like in Eden Encore there is a special mode in the end of the game, if you now make it that far, that gives you a new control set, like a lot of people said they wanted. But it's in there as a secret so don't tell anyone *laughs*.The previous PixelJunk Games definitely gave players a real challenge if they want to fully complete them. Was this a conscious choice?
Games these days are getting easier and easier so I want to try to awaken the people a bit. It's not like they are too hard but we want to give players a good challenge to engage them more. We try to make sure that the games are not frustrating but obviously sometimes we fail at this as well.
Will there be an extra Encore or more DLC for PixelJunk Monsters?
There is the PSP-version coming but on the PS3, no. People obviously want more of the same thing but at the same time we don't want to get stuck in a position where we are just creating sequels like a big publisher might do, one of the main policies here is to try not do that. We had no plans to make Encore-expansion for Monsters at all, but because people were requesting it so much we decided to make it and that's also why we call it Encore.
But if we are making a new one I want to put that in series 2 and reinvent it, but nothing has been decided yet.Kom tillbaka imorgon för den tredje delen av intervjun för då snackas det om deras kommande PixelJunk-lir, PixelJunk Shooter.Om man nu missade del 1 av intervjun så kan den hittas via länken nedan.
